My word of the year for 2020 is Transform. I love this word because it is what our lives are already made up of. The last few years have been tumultuous, but I am ready to embrace these changes and transform them into something new and wonderful.
Part of the reason I love this word for 2020 is because it works on so many levels. A personal goal of mine is to transform my house so that it is as beautiful as it is welcoming. A national goal (of the US) is to transform our political landscape and choose new lawmakers by the end of the year. Of course there are other national goals, like making including women, BIPOC, and LGBTQA+ communities safe and included. On a global level, we need to transform our energy consumption and usage.
I also like the word transform because all of you Fiber Artists are transforming yarn every day. Taking some wood and string and being able to make a 3 dimensional piece of clothing is nothing short of magical- even if we know how it works. One of my favorite quotes is from Terry Prachett
“It doesn’t stop being magic just because you know how it works.”
This quote sums up how I feel about knitting and how I feel about life. Just because you know how to move the needles and yarn, just because you know how the yarn flows, just because you can anticipate the pattern does not make the act of knitting (or crochet) less magical. My personal belief is that magic is all around us all the time, but we choose not to see it. Just because we understand the science of how a flower blooms doesn’t make the process of watching a plant put on a bud and then watching it bloom make is less special or amazing. The leaves falling off of the trees in the fall is incredible even though it happens every year.
I want to transform how others see the world. I want to share my slice of life filled with cozy knits, beautiful art, and the magic of everyday life.
